When you embark on the journey to learn the practice of magic, your journey requires tools. Your tools take the form of various types of supplies, some of which you can buy locally, others of which you will need to order online due to their scarcity.

Read on to learn the various supply types and where you can easily find them. Of course, if you can find a single quality purveyor of all types of magickal supplies, you should use them.

Amulets and charms, typically a pentacle, provide protection for those who practice magic, similar to the cross in Christianity. However, you may also see crosses offered in some magickal supply shops since many forms of practice, such as vodun (voodoo) and hoodoo, mix Christianity and pagan elements. The Egyptian ankh also proves a popular choice. Birthstones and gemstones offer various elemental properties. You will find these most easily online.

Magic practitioners use oils to consecrate various items for ritual use, especially candles. These, as well as incense, are used in the dedication ceremonies of new tools, such as an athame. You can purchase these oils in many grocery stores, especially those catering to Hispanic foods. The typical oils include frankincense, myrrh, dragon’s blood, rose, orange, lemon, and lavender. Consecrating your essential oils, powders, and herbs with the rays of sun or the moon is the next level in manifestation. Combining the usage of planetary hours and applying the practice to the specific time frame of conducting spell work or manifestation practice will ensure success.

You can purchase incense locally in most areas. Any form works – sticks, cones, loose powder. Whatever you like, you use. Only the scents matter, since the manufacturers derive them from plants known for their magickal properties. Every plant has its elemental properties, but some became more popular in use. If a plant grew easily in many regions, it became more widely used. Many of the same plants used in Chinese traditional practices also became popular among pagans in Europe and the Americas.

You have choices between candles. You can easily make your own or you can purchase them and subsequently consecrate them for magickal use. You should start with votive candles since you probably won’t have the stamina for taper spell work at first. A taper candle lasts for a day or more, while a votive might burn for two hours. You can easily find starter sets providing one taper in each primary color and a few secondary colors. You can also purchase unscented candles in multi-packs of the same color. You can find candles in any store.

Books

You can purchase both blank books to write your own spells and prayers and books on your chosen area of practice or religion at your local bookstore or online. Although the European neo-pagan name for the blank book in which you write your own spells, thoughts, and journey has become most popular – the Book of Shadows – other religions use the same process. Christians keep a prayer journal, but this practice is actually new, as neo-pagan hints. Originally, all learning was verbal, such as with Jewish Kabbalist magic and traditional European magic, such as ancient Druidism.

Tools of Practice

You can purchase your major new tools, vintage/second-hand, or make them yourself. The latter provides the best emotional connection with the tools, while the first provides the easiest method. Choosing vintage means you make an extra step for yourself, since you first must sanitize the item from the energies of its prior owners. They may have had negative energies and have imbued that tool with them. So, when purchasing ritual knives, cauldron, incense holders, lighters, robes, etc., use caution. When you buy new, you can use a simple consecration that first cleanses the tool, but a used tool has been through many hands and proverbial hearts, so it requires extra cleansing. Few people have the talents required to make their own, but if you do, this provides the best method of securing magickal tools.

Hopefully, this blog has helped you determine the best sources for your magickal needs. Regardless of your chosen path, choosing well-cleansed items of good quality that resonate with you can only bless your practice or worship.
